Staff Picks of the Month - Pietro Coffee Grinder

Hailing from the charming city of Ipoh, Jon grew up just like any other Malaysian with his very own ambition of becoming an environmentalist. Life took a turn for the better after his aunt gave him a simple dripper from Daiso as a gift . The coffee industry was never part of the plan, but as the famous saying goes "I didn't choose the coffee life, the coffee life chose me".

It was right after the pandemic lockdown was lifted for the final time that Jon decided to move down south. "I knew that the coffee scene in Kuala Lumpur is much more mature than in my own hometown, which is why I chose to migrate to the big city to experience it firsthand."

And so, Jon's journey into the world of coffee began.

Jon proceeded to grab a peculiar manual grinder from the shelf in the showroom, and placed it on the demo bar.

"I'm sure you know about the Pietro grinder".

It's not everyday that you get to see a manual grinder with a vertical retractable grinder. And it's only fair to compare the Pietro to your childhood days of sharpening your pencil with the similarly designed pencil sharpener you'd find at your school.

Dark-T burrs on the Pietro.

The 58mm burrs, made of Böhler M340 stainless steel, are covered with a black coating specially made for Fiorenzato burrs, called Dark-T. The black coating in titanium, aluminum, carbon and nitrogen guarantees a 5 times life greater than standard burrs.

"While it may be a multipurpose grinder, capable of grinding from as fine as espresso and even coarse as cold brew, the magic to me is when you're grinding for filter".

Nothing beats a filter coffee test than the good old V60. Jon whipped out the essentials to brew a good cup, and began grinding with the Pietro.

As he was brewing us a cup of Indonesian beans, he shared with us a bit of how he came about in the coffee industry. "It was only last year that I arrived in KL, dreaming of making it big in the city that never sleeps. My career began as a barista at Craft Origin, learning all the basics of making coffee. Somehow, I found myself as a recruiter for a business process outsourcing company, and then back again as a barista at a few cafes such as Rex KL".

"Before I knew it, I was a part of the sales team of Lamarsa, and even joining competitions such as the Hario Brewers Cup and the latest Malaysia AeroPress Championship. I guess the coffee life did choose me after all".

Being part of the sales team, it was crucial for Jon to be dynamic and have a combination of interpersonal skills, product knowledge, and of course, surrounding himself with coffee whenever he could.

The Pietro unleashed the flavours and aroma of the Indonesians beans he used, emitting blueberry wine and apricot notes.

"It's a bit brawny, priced at RM1,750 and weighing 1.5 kg. This is not your average manual coffee grinder. However, after using the Pietro for a good couple of months, it has grown on me and has become one of my favorite grinders to use!"

If you think the Pietro logo looks awfully familiar, you are right. Pietro is actually a tribute to the Italian entrepreneur Pietro Fiorenzato, the founder of Fiorenzato that was established in 1936.

Which is why the logo looks essentially like a greened out of Fiorenzato's.

"It also comes in 6 different colours, which is uncommon for a manual coffee grinder. The fact that it is portable makes it easy to carry it around during your travels, but it may be a bit heavy though".

Pietro comes in 6 different colours; Arctic White, Deep Black, Pure Silver, Pastel Blue, Forest Green and Dusty Pink

The Pietro also uses M340 steel certified for food use and produced in-house by Fiorenzato's R&D department in two different geometries. Cleaning the beefy 58mm burrs is also made easy with just a click of the notch and twisting the lever.

"Last but not least, the simple yet elegant design of the Pietro gives it a truly unique look. The top cap and bottom container are airtight to ensure freshness, the finishing makes it feel really good to use, and featuring flat burrs on a manual coffee grinder is truly revolutionary".

The Pietro manual coffee grinder is the first of its kind, igniting the vertical revolution. Along with Fiorenzato's decades of experience in the coffee grinder industry, there is no questioning on how outstanding the Pietro performs. 58mm Dark-T burrs, ergonomic design with vertical lever and silicone grip, and of course, being a multipurpose grinder seals the deal for the Pietro.
